Explorations

are ongoing projects made up of how stories, community, and how creativity can deepen our connection to the outdoors. Some ideas become podcasts. Others become businesses, research, or community projects. They're all driven by the same belief: that when people feel connected to a place, they're more likely to care for it and protect it.

The Mountain Outpost

Helping people connect to nature everyday.

2015–2017 | Stories First

The Mountain Outpost started with conversations.

Through a podcast, I shared the voices of athletes, guides, scientists, artists, conservationists, and everyday people whose lives had been shaped by the outdoors. Their stories weren't about summits or records—they were about belonging, stewardship, resilience, and finding home in wild places.

Because stories have always been one of the most powerful ways to inspire action.

2018–2025 | Making Nature Feel More Accessible

As the world slowed down, more people looked outside their own front doors. The Mountain Outpost shifted too.

The mission expanded beyond storytelling into helping people discover that connecting with nature didn't require climbing Everest or living in the mountains. It could begin with a walk through the woods, a few mindful breaths on a local trail, or simply learning to notice the seasons changing.

We became a community working to reconnect people with the natural world through stories, movement, and shared experiences—helping rewild our daily lives while building deeper appreciation for the places worth protecting.

That evolution led to new programs including:

  • Yoga for athletes and outdoor adventurers, designed to improve mobility, recovery, and resilience.

  • Forest bathing, meditation, and mindfulness experiences that encouraged slowing down and paying attention.

  • Guided movement and mindfulness practices for hikers, runners, climbers, paddlers, and anyone seeking a deeper relationship with the outdoors.

  • Virtual workshops exploring sustainable living, nature connection, and mindful recreation.

Building Community Along the Way

The Mountain Outpost was never meant to exist in isolation. Over the years I collaborated with nonprofits, outdoor brands, conservation organizations, wellness practitioners, and local communities from Vermont to Washington State, creating spaces where people could gather, learn, and share ideas.

Together we hosted:

  • Storytelling events

  • Community hikes and outdoor experiences

  • Yoga and mindfulness workshops

  • Podcast conversations

  • Environmental education programs

  • Conservation-focused discussions and partnerships

Every event was built around the same belief: People protect what they feel connected to.

2025 | Closing the Chapter

In 2025, The Mountain Outpost officially closed.

Not because the mission had ended, but because it had become part of something larger. The Mountain Outpost leaves behind an idea: that reconnecting people to the outdoors is one of the most powerful ways to create healthier communities and healthier landscapes.

Those lessons continue to shape the work of Skirting the Mountains today, where storytelling remains a tool for building connection, inspiring stewardship, and helping people find their own path back to the wild.

“We are a community working to reconnect with the natural world through telling the stories of the people & places, in the outdoors in order to rewild our daily lives and help protect the wild spaces we love.”
