Forests, Parks and Recreation

The Terrain

The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation wanted to expand public awareness of its conservation efforts and better engage Vermonters online. But the website was outdated, social media was underperforming, and important messages weren’t reaching the people who needed to hear them.

Charting the Trail

As Communications & Outreach Manager, I led initiatives to modernize and amplify their voice:

  • Directed a full website redesign to improve user experience, accessibility, and navigation.

  • Launched multi-platform social media campaigns to highlight conservation and sustainable forestry.

  • Coordinated statewide outreach events to engage communities directly.

Steps Along the Way

  • Implemented WCAG-compliant design for the website, making information more accessible for all users.

  • Produced educational signage and visual content to bring forestry practices to life.

  • Built the Division’s first large-scale photography project to strengthen visual storytelling across all platforms.

The Summit View

  • +300% increase in Facebook reach by using tailored content and optimized publishing.
+200% increase in Instagram reach through consistent, visually compelling campaigns.

  • Secured regular earned media coverage by actively engaging press outlets.

Trail Markers for What’s Next

This project showed that when you pair strong visuals with clear, accessible messaging, communities not only listen, they engage. The Division now has a vibrant online presence that matches the beauty and importance of Vermont’s forests.
